1988: Stormtrooper

After the success of the previous year, I went for a technically more ambitious costume, an Imperial Stormtrooper. Again, I used poster board, cheap sunglasses, a toy helmet, and paper/cloth-maché on a chickenwire and papertowel tube frame for the helmet and on straw frames for the shoulder pads.

Even though the costume was in some ways better than the Darth Vader costume (more complete, more accurate), wearing it to school didn't go as well as the previous year. At this point, it was 1988, five years after Return of the Jedi had came out, and Star Wars had kind of phased out of the public's collective consciousness. Consequently, a lot of people had no idea what I was. (Besides, a stormtrooper isn't nearly as cool as Darth Vader, anyway. It was quite a demotion!)
