2002: Mummy

After doing the vamipre bit, I was thinking about the other 'classic' monsters - Frankenstein's monster, the Wolfman, and... THE MUMMY. So I decided a year ago that that was what I wanted to be. With a week or so left before the party, I realized if I'm going to do it, I'd better start cracking with that costume! It reminded me of why full costumes can be so difficult - you have to cover yourself head to toe. And I mean that literally in this case.

I bought cheap sweats, cheap gloves, and a bunch of cheap fabric from Walmart. I tore the fabric into long strips and soaked them in tea overnight, to get the to look more worn. My lucky break was discovering/using carpet tape: it's thin, it's very sticky, and it sticks to cloth well. So that's what I used to attach the strips to the sweats. My friend Meredith was kind enough to help me. (It's kind of hard to reach your own back.) By making most of it in advance, I just had to pull the sweats (and gloves and shoes) on when it was time for the party.

The face was an old 'Living Faces' mask I bought the year before - not for the mask, but for the skull-shaped plastic form it came in. (I put water in it and froze it to make skull-shaped ice for the punch.) Since I had this mask, I decided to paint it and use it as it was meant to be used.
